New Releases for the week of 12/18

Somewhat slim pickins’ this week. Nothing worth bothering with for the physical consoles, but Virtual Console gets a few new things.
- New Virtual Console Games for 12/18
- Tennis (NES) – It’s…Tennis. A 1st gen NES game. What else can you really say about it? Maybe we’ll get Excitebike…
- Space Harrier II (Gen) – Psuedo-3D look, blasting flying alien weirdos, even voice samples (which were really impressive at the time) A fine piece of classic gaming.
- Military Madness (TG-16) – A.K.A. Nectaris, this is one of the best and most consistently overlooked titles the Turbo had (even though they were all pretty well overlooked). Play this game and see if you can track its evolution into Advance Wars.
- Virtual Console games announced for 12/25
- Urban Champion (NES) – mediocre 8-bit fighting game
- Baseball (NES) – one of the first NES sports games. Maybe one day the VC will integrate Neo*Geo support so I can play my favorite – Baseball Stars Professional
- Dungeon Explorer (TG-16) – A lengthy yet somewhat bland dungeon crawler. But it at least has randomly generated dungeons.
- ToeJam & Earl (Gen) – Some people rave about this game, personally, I’ve never played it. But maybe I will…

About the only game I’m interested on in that list would have to be ToeJam and Earl. I’m extremely disappointed in this week’s releases, because when I can’t make up my mind on what few games to download over the weekend I usually just decide to wait it out until Monday to see what new is coming out.
So far I’ve only downloaded Gunstar Heroes and Bonk’s Adventure, and the only other games I’m considering are Zelda and Sonic.
I can’t believe you’ve never played ToeJam and Earl! That was like one of the main reasons I went out and got a Genesis. You have the option of playing the game with set levels (a little harder) or randomized levels (a little easier), which gives it a good deal of replayability. Besides the level design, the rest of the game is hilariously random as well.
The more points you get the better rank you get, so you move on up from being a weiner to poindexter to peanut to bro etc. And your item pickups are random unless you pay a hard-to-find NPC to get them identified, so most of the time it’s a game of chance. From rootbeer that heals you slightly and makes your character burp for a few minutes, to hi-top sneakers that make you run like the Road Runner (complete with ‘meep meep’s), to instant death.
Also – how many games out there center on using tomatoes for weapons?
The only bad part is that you can’t play VC games over the internet with others.
