Cratermaze Hudson TG16 600 An attempt to make the basic formula of Pac-Man interesting, with colorful backgrounds, and the ability to lay traps for your enemies. Meh
Metroid Nintendo NES 500 The original classic. The only reason you shouldn’t buy this is if you already have Zero Mission on the GBA. And even then… Win
Shining in the Darkness Sega Genesis 800 The first of Sega’s ‘Shining’ series of RPG’s is a hodge-podge of cliches from other, better games. Meh

Title Developer Release Price Description Get?
Donkey Kong Nintendo 2006/11/19 500 A perfect conversion of the arcade hit that put Nintendo on the map. Win
Legend of Zelda Nintendo 2006/11/19 500 It’s fucking Zelda. The original adventure. That’s all anyone should have to say about this. Win
Mario Bros. Nintendo 2006/11/19 500 Mario and Luigi’s first outing together, which is nothing at all like the games that would follow. It’s fun for 2player, but alone it just gets repetitive. Meh
Pinball Nintendo 2006/11/19 500 One table, no variations, no extra features…this one just doesn’t hold up well at all. Fail
Soccer Nintendo 2006/11/19 500 Primitive 1st-generation NES sports game. Fail
Solomon’s Key Tecmo 2006/11/19 500 Very hard, very long action-puzzle game. S’good, yah. Win
Donkey Kong Jr. Nintendo 2006/12/04 500 Another arcade conversion that was somewhat popular in its time, but the controls prove to be complex and the game itself a bit repetitive. Meh
Ice Hockey Nintendo 2006/12/11 500 Another primitive 1st-gen NES sports game. Fail
Tennis Nintendo 2006/12/18 500 Yet another primitive 1st-gen NES sports game. Fail
Super Mario Bros. Nintendo 2006/12/25 500 The original Super Mario Bros. in all its 8-bit glory. Still just as much fun as you remember. Win
Baseball Nintendo 2007/01/01 500 We’re covering all the bases (haha) with yet another bland 1st-gen NES sports game. Fail
Urban Champion Nintendo 2007/01/01 500 Mediocre early 8-bit beat-em-up. Fail
Gradius Konami 2007/01/08 500 Konami’s original ultra-hard side-scrolling shooter. The power-up system is unique, but later games would refine it to not be so annoying. Meh
Xevious Namco 2007/01/15 500 This is one of those titles that was groundbreaking and impressive in its time but now just looks old and crappy. Meh
Ice Climber Nintendo 2007/02/12 500 Another Nintendo arcade classic. Simplistic yet fun at least for a while. Meh
Kid Icarus Nintendo 2007/02/12 500 Awesome if linear platforming adventure, largely overlooked due to being released at the same time as Metroid. Win
Kirby’s Adventure HAL Laboratory 2007/02/12 500 The second game in the Kirby series, it has all the features you’d expect in a Kirby game. Graphics look a little washed out, but other than that, it’s as much fun as any other Kirby game. Win
Legend of Kage Taito 2007/02/19 500 Pretty lame arcade action, ranked #9 on Seanbaby’s list of the worst Nintendo games ever. Even ninjas can’t make this cool. Fail
Elevator Action Taito 2007/03/05 500 Horribly dated arcade game, focused more on hiding and sneaking than fighting. Fail
Tecmo Bowl Tecmo 2007/03/12 500 Better than average, but still a really really old sports game. Fail
Excitebike Nintendo 2007/03/19 500 Classic motorcycle acrobatics and racing action with customizeable tracks. This was one of the original must-haves for the NES. Win
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Konami 2007/04/02 600 On the one hand, you have varied characters and a lengthy adventure. On the other, most of your trip is going from one dead-end path to another. Meh
Galaga Namco 2007/04/09 500 Simple arcade shooter that’s managed to appear in every Namco Museum edition that’s come out so far. A bit tiresome after a while. Meh
Punch Out!! Nintendo 2007/04/16 500 Nintendo’s classic boxing game revisited, sans Mike Tyson. Still just as intense as you remember. Win
Castlevania Konami 2007/04/30 500 Konami’s original whip-weilding, vampire-slaying adventure. A bit slow-moving and dodgy in places…imho this series didn’t really get good until around Symphony of the Night Meh
Mighty Bomb Jack Tecmo 2007/05/07 500 Arcade adventure with a hero who’s weirder than Bomberman. Meh
Ninja Gaiden Tecmo 2007/05/14 500 Among the best-loved of the old NES platformers, and it helped introduce cinematics and storytelling into games. Plus, it’s about ninjas. Win
Pac-Man Namco 2007/05/14 500 Another Namco classic that’s been milked to death already. Yeah, it was one of the important pieces of early gaming history, but come on, there’s already 5000 iterations of it. Meh
Milon’s Secret Castle Hudson Soft 2007/06/04 500 A lengthy, cute, complex and somewhat odd adventure that still holds up well after all this time. Win
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link Nintendo 2007/06/04 500 The highly anticipated sequel to Zelda, many people complained that the battle scenes, towns and dungeons had become side-scrolling instead of sticking to the standard overhead view. Still a worthy game though. Win
Lode Runner Br0derbund 2007/06/11 500 Grab the gold, climb the ladders, dodge the…what is that anyway. At least it isn’t Deadly Towers. Fail
NES Open Tournament Golf Nintendo 2007/06/18 500 Okay golf sim, featuring Mario, Luigi and pals. It’s good for the NES, but has been surpassed by better games like Kirby’s Dream Course or Albatross18, and in general sports games don’t really retain a lot of nostalgia value. Meh
Super Mario Bros. 2 Nintendo 2007/07/02 500 By now, everyone knows this one wasn’t originally a Mario game. But who cares? It’s lots of fun, and introduces many concepts that became staples of Mario’s world. Win
Mach Rider Nintendo 2007/07/09 500 Witness the horror that is, the NES trying to do 3D. At least this is an interesting concept, combining shooting and blowing things up with your typical motorcycle racer. And it has editable tracks. Meh
Yoshi Nintendo 2007/07/09 500 Don’t get excited because of the title. This is basically a remake of Hatris, an rightfully obscure puzzle game where you have to reverse columns of stuff to match falling objects. And that’s the only control you have over anything. Fail
Balloon Fight Nintendo 2007/07/16 500 Nintendo’s version of Joust, with kids flying around with balloons instead of ostrich-mounted knights. Simple and good for multiplayer, not so much for single. Meh
Star Soldier Hudson 2007/07/30 500 The original Star Soldier isn’t as graphically impressive as its TG16 sequels, but it’s still a solid vertically-scrolling shooter that was groundbreaking for its time. Win
Adventures of Lolo Hal Laboratories 2007/08/06 500 The kind of arcade-style puzzle/action game that was popular in the 80′s but quietly faded with time. No scrolling – each screen is a puzzle in which you must retreive a key and avoid the enemies. Graphically unimpressive, but the frantic puzzle-solving is still fun. Win

TurboGrafx-16 games

Title Developer Release Price Description Get?
Bomberman ’93 Hudson 2006/11/21 600 Bomberman at its most basic – a frenetic 4-player battle, or a ho-hum single-player puzzle/adventure. Meh
Bonk’s Adventure Hudson / Red 2006/11/21 600 Bonk was the closest thing NEC ever had to a ‘mascot’ character for the TG16. As such, there’s a great platformer to be found here, with minigames, varied locales and nice bits of technique. Win
Super Star Soldier Hudson 2006/11/27 600 A good vertical-scrolling shooter with a nice variety of weapons and arguably the best graphics of any TG16 game. Win
Victory Run Hudson 2006/12/04 600 Lackluster racing game whos only real draw was the ability to maintain and upgrade your car. Fail
Alien Crush Compile 2006/12/11 600 Pinball fans will dig the creepy visuals and specials. It’s fun for a while, but there’s still only one table not counting the bonus screens, and it does get old after a while. Meh
Military Madness Hudson 2006/11/18 600 Futuristic strategy game whos basic architecture would inspire later titles like Advance Wars. Not much happening in the visual or sound departments though. Meh
R-type Irem / Hudson 2006/12/25 800 A near perfect port of the arcade game, which is a hallmark for side-scrolling shooter fans everywhere. Win
Dungeon Explorer Atlus / Hudson 2007/01/08 600 Bland dungeon crawl with randomly generated dungeons and support for up to 5 players. Meh
Soldier Blade Hudson 2007/01/08 600 Another vertically-scrolling shooter that doesn’t look as impressive compared to Super Star Soldier, a later game in the same series. Meh
Moto Roader Hudson 2007/01/15 600 A futuristic yet completely boring racing game. Fail
Vigilante Irem 2007/02/05 600 A beat-em-up that was okay in its time but even then, not really noteworthy. Good if you like that sort of thing. Meh
New Adventure Island Hudson 2007/02/19 600 Part of a series of strange platformers I never personally liked but were popular for a while. Meh
Chew Man Fu Hudson 2007/02/26 600 Asian stereotypes aside, this is a cute, fun and challenging puzzle/action game. Win
Double Dungeons Hudson 2007/03/12 600 A psuedo-3D dungeon crawl for one or two players. Interesting for a while in 1P mode, but as the name suggests, best played with two. Meh
Splatterhouse Namco 2007/03/19 600 A bloody arcade beat-em-up featuring an almost copyright-infringing masked antihero. First game to rate a parental advisory, years before Mortal Kombat. Win
Dragon’s Curse Hudson / West One Bit 2007/04/02 600 A.K.A. Wonder Boy 3, this is a pretty good sidescrolling action-RPG, with a character who has been cursed and turned into a dragon. Win
Bravoman Namco 2007/04/09 600 Silly sidescrolling superhero action. Not particularly good, but charming nonetheless. The engrish alone is worth the price. Meh
Bonk’s Revenge Red 2007/04/16 600 Not much changed or improved from Bonk’s Adventure, just more of the same headbutting, meat-chomping dinosaur-bashing action. Win
Battle Lode Runner Hudson 2007/04/23 600 The same tedious action as Lode Runner on the NES, but allowing up to 5 players to share the pain. Misery loves company, after all. Fail
Shockman Hudson 2007/04/30 600 The second of a series of Japanese anime-parody games, this game will provide a good dose of lighthearted Megaman-style action. Win
Ordyne Namco 2007/05/07 600 Namco’s little-known sidescrolling comedy shooter. Nicely drawn sprites and lots of action. Win
Ninja Spirit Irem 2007/05/14 600 A port of Irem’s hugely underappreciated ninja action sidescroller. Pick from four different ninja weapons each with its own strategy and technique to use, attack with shadow copies of yourself as you delve deeper into a spooky underworld of undead samurai and flesh-eating demigods. Win
Blazing Lazers Compile 2007/05/21 600 A personal favorite from the TG’s large library of vertical-scrolling shooters, with four basic weapons that can each upgrade into several different forms before reaching full power. Catchy tunes too. Win
J.J. & Jeff Hudson 2007/05/28 600 With all the poop, pee and fart jokes taken out for the American audience, what you have left is just a mediocre arcade-style action game. Still fun but…you can tell a lot is missing. Meh
Dead Moon Natsume 2007/06/04 600 Side-scrolling shooter, using Blazing Lazers’ idea of having several upgrade levels for its basic weapons array. There’s some nice, large and detailed enemies to fight against as well. Overall, not the best, but still worthwhile. Win
Bloody Wolf G-Mode 2007/06/18 600 A decent enough top-view shooter, boasting better graphics, cut-scenes and story than the arcade version. Not much variety in the weapons or enemies though. Meh
World Sports Competition Hudson 2007/06/18 600 A summer olympics styled game, like Konami’s old Track and Field, but better. It’s got 12 events, so there’s variety, but still…it’s an old sports game. Meh
China Warrior Hudson 2007/06/25 600 This is essentially a tech demo for the TG16, showing how large of sprites it can handle. But they’re poorly animated, and there’s only four human characters in the whole game – it’s just endless punching and kicking as the screens go by. Boooooring. Fail
Dragon Spirit Namco 2007/07/02 600 The TG16′s library did enjoy some near-perfect arcade converstions. This one’s a vertical-scrolling shooter with a twist – instead of a lone plane in space, you’re a knight who’s been cursed and changed into a dragon. Get out there and burninate the countryside! Burninate the peasants! Burninate all the peoples in their thatched-roof cottages! o/~ Win
Air Zonk Hudson 2007/07/09 600 Bonk didn’t turn out the be the attention-grabbing mascot everyone hoped for, but he was enough of one to warrant this weird Parodius-like spinoff game. It’s not a great technical shooter, but it’s wacky, lighthearted fun. Win
Silent Debuggers G-Mode 2007/07/16 600 Run through identical looking ’3D’ corridors and fight the same alien blobby tentacle thing over and over. If you like this, you may enjoy factory work. Fail
Devil’s Crush Irem 2007/07/23 600 Like all great sequels, this improves on everythign that was great and fun about the original. Still, it is ‘just’ a pinball game, so there’s no great variety or exploration to be had. Win
Drop Off G-Mode 2007/07/30 600 Kind of a strange cross between Arkanoid (Breakout) and a falling-blocks puzzle game. Interesting but not really much depth to it. Meh
Galaga '90 Namco 2007/08/06 600 An updated version of the classic Galaga with more enemies, better graphics, bonus cycles, warp holes, etc. A classic. Win

Sega Genesis games

Title Developer Release Price Description Get?
Altered Beast Sega 2006/11/19 800 The original pack-in cart for the Genesis, it’s a pretty failthgul port of the arcade game. It’s pretty short and not all that memorable, but has some charming moments. Meh
Sonic the Hedgehog Sega 2006/11/19 800 The original Sonic – more than just a gimmicky mascot, this fun, unique platformer would be done rather less well on other systems. Win
Ecco the Dolphin Novotrade International 2006/11/28 800 A game about dolphins, created at the height of the ‘Earth Awareness’ trend of the 90′s. Okay, but I can’t play it without feeling like a dirty hippie. Meh
Golden Axe Sega 2006/11/28 800 Sega’s take on the Final Fight style beat-em-up, featuring some rather generic fantasy characters. Meh
Columns Sega / Compile 2006/12/04 800 A unique take on the falling-blocks style puzzle game that’s annoying because of the limits of what the game permits you to do with the pieces. Meh
Ristar Sega 2006/12/04 800 A ‘dead end’ branch of the development path that eventually led to Sonic. This didn’t draw too much attention to itself, but it’s still worth trying. Win
Dr Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine Compile 2006/12/11 800 Why Sega felt the need to overwrite PuyoPuyo‘s adorable cast with Sonic characters, we may never know. But this is still the first time one of the best, fast-paced and competitive puzzle games ever made it out of Japan, and that’s worth something. Win
Gunstar Heroes Treasure 2006/12/11 800 Treasure’s famous frenetic run-n-shoot game almost speaks for itself. Win
Space Harrier II Sega 2006/12/18 800 It’s kinda sad that Sega’s arcade hit was done better on the TurboGrafx, a supposedly less powerful system. Fail
ToeJam & Earl Johnson Voorsanger Productions 2006/12/25 800 People rave about this game. I really don’t know why. The graphics are Master System quality at best, the jokes are stale, and the randomly generated levels just mean that every level is exactly the same with no guarantee of finding any item you might want or need. Fail
Bonanza Bros. U.S. Gold / Synergy 2007/01/29 800 A side-scrolling platformer that tries to introduce the ‘sneaking’ style gameplay that would later become popular in Metal Gear Solid and its derivatives, with mixed results. Meh
Comix Zone Sega Technical Institute 2007/01/29 800 An adventure set in the pages of a comic book, with an authentic visual style. A unique example of metafictional storytelling done before such things became all-too-popular. Win
Gain Ground Sega 2007/02/05 800 Sega’s take on Gauntlet style overhead-view adventuring, offering a team of 20 unique characters in a modern military setting. Meh
Streets of Rage Sega 2007/02/19 800 Sega sure did spend a lot of time emulating other, more popular arcade games. This time we visit Final Fight/Double Dragon territory with another beat-em-up in a modern inner city. Meh
Bio-Hazard Battle Sega 2007/02/26 800 A mediocre side-scrolling shooter whos only defining feature is the organic theme of its ships and areas. Fail
Sword of Vermilion Sega 2007/03/05 800 An RPG with a generic story. The main draws were its psuedo-3d world map and dungeons, and its real-time action battles, neither of which were done very well. Fail
Sonic Spinball Sega Technical Institute 2007/03/12 800 Sonic’s bouncing ball form taken to its logical conclusion – large pinball-like areas but with the ability to influence his motions with the D-pad. Neat idea, and pretty fun even if it only has four zones. Win
Beyond Oasis Ancient 2007/03/19 800 A solid action-RPG featuring a spirit-summoning hero in an Arabian-themed tale. Win
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle Sega 2007/04/09 800 Sega’s first attempt at making themselves a mascot character, who never really managed to star in any good or memorable games beyond the first Master System outing. This one gets points for trying, but is quite far from giving Mario any competition. Meh
Virtua Fighter 2 Sega-AM2 2007/04/16 800 Ugh. Why would you even bother trying to port a game that relied so heavily on 3d polygons to the Genesis? This one should’ve stayed buried. Fail
Wonder Boy in Monster World WestOne Bit 2007/04/23 800 Another pretty good yet consistently ignored action-rpg in the Wonder Boy series, this would be the last one anyone bothered to release in English. Win
Streets of Rage 2 Sega 2007/05/21 800 Much improved and refined version of the original, this one actually distinguishes itself from the game it had originally tried to emulate. Win
Kid Chameleon Sega Technical Institute 2007/05/28 800 Another action-platformer that saves itself from mediocrity by the many varied masks the hero can wear which change both his appearance and his abilities with each one. Win
Toejam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron Johnson Voorsanger Productions 2007/06/04 800 This concept still reeks of forced, kid-friendly corporate ‘cool’ but at least it’s ditched the bland overhead play for a side-scrolling adventure with actual goals. Better, but still not great. Meh
Golden Axe II Sega 2007/06/11 800 Almost exactly the same as the original, but slightly easier, this barely qualifies as a sequel at all. If you liked the first, it’s great, but don’t go looking for anything new. Meh
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Sega 2007/06/11 800 This is everything a sequel should be – taking the parts that made the original great and improving on those while adding new features and characters. Win
Ecco: The Tides of Time Sega 2007/07/02 800 Another installment of Sega’s dolphin adventure game. Hippies may get something out of this, but for the rest of us… Meh
Shining Force Sega 2007/07/23 800 Lots of people love the Shining series of RPG’s. To me it’s rather slow-paced and uninteresting. Your mileage may vary. Meh
Dynamite Headdy Sega 2007/07/30 800 One of those really odd yet lovable mascot-driven platformers from the early 90′s – this one features a character who gets around by shooting his head at things. Weird, but fun. Win

SuperNES games

Title Developer Release Price Description Get?
F-Zero Nintendo 2006/11/19 800 A futuristic and decently fun racing game – think Mario Kart with a more serious slant. The extensive use of Mode-7 looks gimmicky now, but in its day it was pretty impressive. Meh
SimCity Nintendo EAD 2006/11/19 800 The original game of tedious micromanagement that would lead to The Sims. People eat this crap up, but this sort of thing does better on the PC. A gaming ‘platform’ where people expect to be bored. Fail
Street Fighter II: The World Warrior Capcom 2006/12/25 800 At the time, this was the best home port of Capcom’s groundbreaking arcade fighter you could get. But Capcom’s killed the ‘classic’ value of this title by releasing at least one other slightly improved version of the same game every year ever since. With these newer versions still fresh in the memory, the original doesn’t carry the same nostialgia – it just looks old and outdated. Fail
Super Castlevania IV Konami 2006/12/25 800 Notable mostly for being the last of the slower-moving original-style Castlevanias before the Dracula X series would inject the more intense action that we’ve come to love in latter-day releases. Still worth playing, though. Win
R-Type III: The Third Lightning Irem 2007/01/15 800 An improved version of the already awesome R-Type series fo side-scrolling shooters, this one introduces a selection of different Forces with their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as lots of SuperNES-tailored eye candy Win
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Nintendo 2007/01/22 800 The third Zelda game returns to the series’ overhead-view roots while improving on every aspect of it from graphics to gameplay. It also introduces time-travel, music and several other aspects that would become series hallmarks. A definite must-own. Win
Contra III: The Alien Wars Konami 2007/01/29 800 Another popular series gets the SuperNES-special treatment, becoming all the better for it. Nice run-and-gun action with a good variety of weapons, a bit on the difficult side as Contra always has been. Win
Super Mario World Nintendo 2007/02/05 800 The SuperNES’s original pack-in cart follows the patterns of SMB3 into new territory. Sadly, the Tanooki tail/suit is gone, replaced by a lame cape, but in exchange we get… Yoshi! Win
Donkey Kong Country Rareware 2007/02/19 800 Call me a heretic, but I hate Donkey Kong, I hate ‘shiny’ CGI prerendered sprites, and I hate this game. Fail
Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts Capcom 2007/03/05 800 Rather than the faithful arcade ports that showed up on the other 16-bitters, Capcom made an entirely new adventure for Arthur and his fragile armor, with new weapons, new areas, new everything. It’ still just as punishingly hard as the others though. Win
Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire Koei 2007/03/26 800 The last English version of Koei’s long-running series of historical strategy games. Decent AI system for making enemies and allies as you try to unite all of China under your flag. It’s good, but it still feels like a history lesson. Meh
Gradius III Konami 2007/04/23 800 Konami’s signature side-scrolling shooter improved with a fully customizeable weapons series. The slowdown in this game is actually due to its being too faithful to the arcade version. Win
Legend of the Mystical Ninja Konami 2007/04/30 800 Konami’s lengthy comedy ninja adventure featuring a host of archetypes from traditional Japanese mythology, along with some Konami self-referential parody. Too bad so much was lost in translation – even the names of Goemon and Ebisumaru. “Kid Ying and Dr. Yang?” Come on… Win
Final Fight Capcom 2007/05/07 800 An arcade-to-home port of the beat-em-up everyone at the time was trying to beat. Complete with illogical and insulting changes made for the ‘kiddie’ non-Japanese audience. Meh
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong’s Quest Rareware 2007/05/21 800 Still hate Donkey Kong and his freakin’ country, still hate CGI prerenders, and this game does little to change my mind. Fail
ActRaiser Quintet 2007/05/28 800 Another keeper – mixing action battles and Populous style overview modes – you play as a god who awakens from a long slumber and finds he must win back his power and the faith of his people…by force if necessary! Win
Street Fighter II’ Turbo: Hyper Fighting Capcom 2007/06/25 800 WTF?! This is a slightly tweaked version of the same Street Fighter II that was released a month ago. The extra title-length is supposed to denote a list of tweaks and improvements, but it’s still THE SAME DAMN GAME. Shame on you, Capcom. Fail
Kirby’s Dream Course Nintendo 2007/07/23 800 A rather fun, silly golf game featuring Kirby in all his pink bounciness. Win

Nintendo64 games

Title Developer Release Price Description Get?
Super Mario 64 Nintendo 2006/11/19 1000 The game that invented the 3D action-platform genre, still holds up pretty well today. Win
Mario Kart 64 Nintendo EAD 2007/01/29 1000 Four-player racing-battle action featuring Mario and his crew. With Mario Kart Double Dash still somewhat fresh in the memory this one doesn’t quite have the nostalgia value of others. Meh
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Nintendo EAD 2007/02/26 1000 Another epic adventure in the Zelda series, with a lenghty main mission and plenty of side-quests. Definitely points well-spent…unless you already have the bonus disc that came with Windwaker. Win
StarFox 64 Nintendo 2007/04/02 1000 StarFox finally goes off his rails and into ‘all-range mode’ in this awesome 3D shooting game. Do a barrel roll! Win
F-Zero X Nintendo 2007/06/25 1000 It’s about time we got a new N64 game. Too bad it’s this one. Even if it’s 3D, it’s essentially the same as the SuperNES game, and doesn’t include the DD Expansion Pack which would have allowed level editing and other fun stuff. Meh
Paper Mario Nintendo 2007/07/16 1000 It’s the first Paper Mario, the awesome rpg-platformer that led to Thousand-Year Door and Super Paper Mario It still holds up quite well against the newer ones, too. Win
Wave Race 64 Nintendo 2007/08/06 1000 There was a breif period in the mid-90′s when every console had to have at least one jet-ski game. This one was easily the best of the lot, and gave customers a taste of just what the newly-introduced Nintendo64 could do. Still, same problem applies with sports games – not much nostalgia value attached, and it just seems outdated. Meh
